This document anticipates the questions you’d ask if you were reading our plain-language summary or claims matrix and could ask follow-ups.
Section A — “Wait, who is this guy?”
Q1: Who is Malcolm Bendall?
A British-Australian inventor, now in his mid-50s. Background isn’t formal physics or engineering — autodidact, eclectic. Has been working on what became the Plasmoid Unification Model since approximately 2010, with the first Thunderstorm Generator built around 2014. Lives between Australia and Europe. Has filed at least one UK patent application (P76426GB, the Vajra turbine). Operates through “Strike Foundation Earth” / Strike Foundation Guarantee Limited as the IP holder. He demos his device publicly, gives lectures (the 16-section MSAART series on howtube), and has spent 2022-2023 trying to commercialize through “Alpha Prospects” investor channels.
The device exists, the patent is real, the demos are real. The open questions are whether the device does what he says it does, and whether the cosmological framework around it has any predictive content.
Q2: Who is Bob Greenyer and why does his opinion matter?
Bob Greenyer is a British engineer who in 2012 co-founded the Martin Fleischmann Memorial Project, a community of researchers who attempt to systematically catalog and replicate the experiments that have come out of the cold fusion / LENR (Low Energy Nuclear Reactions) field since Fleischmann-Pons’ 1989 announcement.
Why his opinion matters: he has 12 years of experience evaluating claims like Bendall’s. He has actually built and instrumented experimental apparatus. He has no financial relationship with Bendall (no royalties, no stake in any company). He gives presentations explaining what he thinks rather than what would be easy to sell. Most importantly: he’s willing to be wrong publicly. The opening line of his “Hypothesis for operation of the TSG” talk is: “This is not perfect. I may be wrong. I have been wrong a lot of times in my life. This may be one of those times.”
That kind of epistemic humility is what makes his analysis useful. He’s also operating from inside the LENR research community — not as a hostile mainstream physicist, not as a true believer.
Q3: Why hasn’t this been on mainstream news?
Three reasons:

The cosmological framework alienates physicists. Any mainstream physicist hearing “144,000 = the Aether scalar, this is what built the Pyramids” stops listening. The honest hardware claim gets buried under unfortunate framing.

The Cold Fusion field’s history. After Fleischmann-Pons 1989, claims of “anomalous heat” or “transmutation” or “low-energy nuclear reactions” became professional poison in mainstream physics. Evaluating Bendall’s claim positively requires admitting LENR might be real, which most physics departments won’t do.

Independent replication is genuinely thin. Greenyer is one independent voice. That’s not zero, but for a claim of this magnitude, ten replicating groups would be normal. Mainstream news is right to wait for that.
The combination of (1)+(2)+(3) means even if the device works exactly as Bendall says, it would take 10+ years of slow community replication before mainstream attention. We are 12 years in.
Section B — “But what about the device itself?”
Q4: Has anyone other than Bendall built a working Thunderstorm Generator?
MFMP has built multiple. There are anecdotal reports of independent makers building scaled-down versions. The published parts list (TGMaterialsList.pdf) is detailed enough that a competent maker can produce one in 2-3 weekends. We have not personally built one.
The 8-year-old TSG that MFMP examined is significant: it predates Bendall’s commercial activity, was operated for an extended period, and was then stored. Its persistent material changes (the “yellow features”) on the inner sphere are the closest thing to documented long-baseline evidence we have.
Q5: What if it really does work — is this free energy?
Strongly no, even in the best case.
Even if every Bendall claim is true, the energy isn’t “free.” Greenyer’s interpretation makes this clear: the energy comes from (a) the fuel you’re burning, plus (b) electromagnetic ionization energy in the atmosphere (specifically, free electrons + UV photolysis products + atmospheric ions). Both are real but bounded — the atmospheric component is limited by the rate at which sunlight produces those species. Conservation of energy is intact.
What COULD be true (and would still be remarkable):
- The TSG converts a higher fraction of fuel-bound chemical energy into useful work than a normal engine does, by recycling heat and unburnt hydrocarbons through the closed loop
- The TSG harvests the otherwise-wasted ionization potential of atmospheric free electrons (a real but small effect — milliwatts to watts per cubic meter of air)
- Some EV-style mechanism produces a small additional yield through novel chemistry
Adding all three together at maximum optimistic estimates gives you maybe 20-40% improved engine efficiency. That’s not “free energy.” It’s “much-better engine.” Both are valuable, but the framing matters.
Q6: What about the “transmutation” claim — would this be like alchemy?
The cold fusion field has reported anomalous element-ratio shifts since the 1990s. The proposed mechanism is low-energy nuclear reactions in metal lattices — the kinds of reactions that happen at energies far below the Coulomb barrier as conventionally calculated. If real, it’s not classical alchemy (you don’t get gold from lead arbitrarily); it’s specific reaction pathways that produce specific isotopic shifts.
What MFMP claims to see in the TSG: changes in Cr/Ni/Fe ratios in stainless steel inner sphere, plus appearance of trace elements. That would be consistent with EV-induced transmutation as Shoulders described. It would also be consistent with surface contamination from operating environment. The crucial test (which has not been done) is doing the analysis with proper control samples.
If transmutation is real in the TSG, the practical implication is interesting but not enormous: you’d be converting tiny amounts of trace elements over hundreds of operating hours. Not a get-rich scheme. But a major physics finding.
Q7: Why is the device cheap if it’s revolutionary?
Because the components are mundane. Stainless-steel hemispheres, copper tube, a UV lamp, water. Nothing exotic. The (alleged) magic is in the configuration, not the materials. This is a feature, not a bug — if the device works, it’s because of how the parts are arranged, not because of unobtainium.
This is also a legitimate red flag: revolutionary tech that’s allegedly cheap to replicate should have many independent confirmations by now. The sparsity of those confirmations is informative.
Q8: Can I just buy one?
No. Bendall hasn’t commercialized them. There are sellers offering “Thunderstorm Generator kits” of varying provenance — most are unauthorized third parties of unverifiable provenance — treat kit offers with care. Bendall’s own commercial activity (Alpha Prospects) appears stalled.
If you want one, build it yourself from the parts list. Total cost ~$700-$2000 depending on tier and existing tooling. Treat it as a learning project; don’t expect commercial-grade reliability.
Section C — “But the cosmology — really, all number tradition?”
Q9: But the math is consistent — doesn’t that mean something?
Yes, it means it’s good number tradition. Not the same as physics. A consistent system that predicts only what you put in is descriptively powerful but explanatorily empty.
Concrete example: Bendall says 144,000 / 5.555... = 25,920 (the “Great Year”). This is exactly true as arithmetic — 144000 × 9 / 50 = 25920 by definition. It’s not a discovery; it’s a tautology. It only becomes a claim about physics if 25,920 turns out to be a real number in nature. The actual axial precession period of Earth is 25,772 years. Bendall picks the round one because it appears in ancient sacred-geometry traditions, then declares the measurement “wrong.”
This is the structural error: choosing round numbers from cultural traditions and treating them as primary, then treating measurements as approximations to the round numbers. Physics works the other way around.
Q10: But Pythagorean ratios in music are also “pretty” — is that number tradition too?
No, those are predictions. Pythagoras observed that if you halve a string’s length, the pitch doubles. That’s a measurable relationship between length and frequency (it’s actually because length is proportional to wavelength is proportional to inverse frequency for transverse waves on a string). The 3:2 perfect-fifth ratio comes out of the physics of string vibration — it predicts what notes will sound consonant.
The PUM ratios don’t predict anything that wasn’t already chosen. The claim “144,000 ÷ 5.555 = 25,920” doesn’t predict the precession period — Bendall picked 25,920 first.
The simple test is: take a PUM identity and see if it predicts something Bendall didn’t already build into the model. We’ve yet to see one that does.
Q11: What about the Pyramid of Cheops at 51.84°? That’s a real measurement, right?
The Pyramid’s mean slope is 51.842° per Petrie’s 1883 survey, with face-by-face variation up to ±0.1°. Bendall’s “51.84” matches that to the precision the Egyptians could have built. However:
The slope of 51.84° is also: 51.84 ≈ atan(4/π) ≈ 51.85 (the angle that gives equal perimeter-to-height ratio of 2π). This was already known in 1859 (the “pi-encoded pyramid” theory). It’s also: 51.84 = atan(√φ) where φ = golden ratio (≈ 51.83°, the “phi-encoded pyramid” theory). And many other coincidences.
So yes, 51.84° is real and yes, it’s consistent with several mathematical identities. The pyramid was almost certainly built using simple ratios that the architects found pleasing. Whether the specific PUM-cosmology interpretation (51.84 = TIME / 10000) is meaningful is a different question — and the answer is no, because that identity is just a numerical equality without predictive content.
Q12: Could Bendall have stumbled onto something real even if his framework is wrong?
This is exactly the question. Inventors regularly produce working devices with theoretically wrong explanations. Edison thought the electron was a positive particle. The Wright brothers’ lift theory was internally wrong but their gliders flew. James Clerk Maxwell believed in luminiferous aether his entire life and gave us the equations of electromagnetism.
The pattern is real and well-documented in history of science. A working device tells you the device works. It tells you nothing about whether the theory the inventor uses to describe it is correct. The two evaluations need to be separate.
So yes: Bendall could have a working device while his framework is mostly wrong. Greenyer’s contribution is offering a better framework that fits the same hardware.
Section D — “But what should I actually do?”
Q13: I’m a hobbyist — should I build one?
Yes, with appropriate safety. The tier-A unit (~$700) on a small generator is buildable in 2-3 weekends if you can TIG-weld stainless. Run it outdoors only — closed-loop exhaust is asphyxiation risk indoors. Photo-document construction. Run with a 5-gas analyser if you can afford the rental. Document what you find.
If you’re going to build it: do Protocol 1 + 2 from our test protocols at minimum. Those are designed for the hobbyist budget. Skipping the protocols and just running it gives you anecdotes; doing the protocols gives you data.
Q14: I’m an engineer — what’s the most interesting open question?
The Greenyer hypothesis: does the TSG produce Ken Shoulders-style EVs in ambient air, and if so, do they induce transmutation in the inner sphere?
If yes, this is a genuinely new way to access EV physics (which has been stuck in vacuum-chamber-only since 1970s). It would open a path for benchtop LENR research.
If no, the device is a competent post-combustion treatment apparatus and the transmutation claims are surface contamination.
Either way, the answer is publishable. The right experiment is Protocol 4 + 5 from our test list, ideally with proper control samples.
Q15: I’m a researcher with a real lab — should I write a grant for this?
Use our lab proposal template. The complete protocol fits in a $50-100k grant scope, 6 months, decisive outcome in either direction. Three private foundations might fund this; ARPA-E “exploratory” pool has occasionally funded LENR work.
Be aware that publishing positive LENR results in mainstream journals is professionally hostile territory. Plan for Journal of Condensed Matter Nuclear Science (LENR community) and Combustion and Flame (mainstream) submissions in parallel. Pre-register your protocol on OSF before any data collection.
Q16: I’m an investor — would you put money in?
No, not yet. Three reasons:
- Energy claims are unverified. No independent calorimetry. Without that, you’re betting on testimony.
- The cosmology is a major reputation/regulatory risk. Bendall’s pyramid-and-Ark framing makes any IPO or institutional funding very hard. Even if the tech works, the marketing problem is severe.
- The trajectory is wrong. 12 years from first prototype with limited independent replication. If this were a real revolution, you’d expect more momentum.
The right minimum bar before investment: three independent labs confirm power output exceeds fuel chemical energy by >10%, with calibrated calorimetry, in pre-registered experiments. That hasn’t happened. Until it does, this is an interesting science story, not an investment opportunity.
That said, the post-combustion treatment business (just the emissions-cleanup part) might be commercially viable on its own merits, separate from the cosmology and the energy claims. There’s a real market for engine-emission cleanup, especially in shipping and small generators. Someone could productize the “boring version” of this — and that company could have a more conventional business case.
Section E — “Is this dangerous?”
Q17: Is the TSG dangerous to operate?
Yes, with multiple risk vectors. Anyone building one needs to address:
- Thermal: outer sphere reaches 250-800 °C in operation. Burn risk, fire risk near anything flammable.
- Asphyxiation: closed-loop returning exhaust to intake means CO and CO₂ accumulate in the local atmosphere if there’s a leak. Outdoor only. CO detector mandatory.
- Electrical: the UV ballast circuit is line-voltage. Wet conditions + line voltage = lethal.
- UV: the lamp is 254 nm. Eye damage (welders’ arc-eye) from direct viewing. Skin/cornea hazard.
- Plasma / charge accumulation: if EV claims are right, there could be high-voltage transients we don’t currently understand. Insulating gloves + safety glasses always.
- Possible ionising radiation: Holmlid-class LENR experiments have reported gamma emission; we don’t know if Bendall’s device does. Geiger counter as cheap precaution.
- Possible vacuum effects: some plasmoid claims involve pressure-related phenomena; the apparatus is not a pressure vessel and could fail unexpectedly.
Treat it as a small home-built reactor with all the appropriate respect.
Q18: If the cosmology is “decorative number tradition”, isn’t this a cult?
It has cult-adjacent features (charismatic founder, comprehensive worldview that can absorb any anomaly, identification with ancient mystical lineages, devoted followers). It also has some non-cult features (open-source publication of plans, willingness to demonstrate publicly, real third-party verification efforts via MFMP).
The cosmology is internally consistent self-reinforcing pattern-matching, which is the defining property of harmless decorative belief systems and the defining property of harmful cults. The difference is whether reality-testing is welcomed or punished. Bendall has welcomed Greenyer’s involvement; that’s a positive signal, even though Greenyer publicly disagrees with much of the cosmology.
Our advice: engage with the device, the BOM, the patents, and the LENR-canon framing Greenyer offers. Disengage from the pyramids-and-Ark cosmology unless you find specific predictions that hold up empirically. So far we haven’t found any.
Q19: How sincere is the effort?
The markers one would check — money taken without delivery, claims that shift to dodge testing, hostility toward replication — are mostly absent. Bendall has spent more money than he’s made. He welcomes outside examination. He publishes the parts lists.
The more relevant consideration is honest self-persuasion: an inventor genuinely convinced his framework is correct, observing anomalies in his own apparatus that conform to his framework’s predictions, without the rigorous control work that would distinguish real anomalies from artifacts.
This is common in frontier inventor physics and requires no bad intent. It simply means independent replication is what settles things.
Section F — Last questions
Q20: What’s the single most important thing you’ve learned doing this work?
That the device and the cosmology are separable, and that they have very different epistemic status.
The device exists. It probably does something — at minimum mundane chemistry, possibly something more. The right response is to test it.
The cosmology is internally consistent number tradition. It can describe anything but predicts nothing. The right response is to ignore it when evaluating the device.
Most discussion of Bendall’s work conflates the two — either by using the cosmology as evidence for the device, or by using the cosmology’s evident weakness as a reason to dismiss the device. Both moves are wrong. Separate them, and you can have an honest conversation.
Q21: If you had to bet, will Bendall be vindicated?
Very low confidence answer: probably not at the cosmological level (the PUM framework will not be adopted by physics). Probably yes at the engineering level (some version of the post-combustion treatment device is real and useful). Maybe at the LENR level (whether actual EV/transmutation phenomena are happening in the TSG is genuinely open and the most interesting question).
Calibrated probabilities (these are guesses, not facts): - Some version of TSG cleans engine exhaust as claimed: 70% - TSG produces measurable >5% engine efficiency improvement: 30% - TSG produces Shoulders-class EVs in ambient air: 15% - TSG produces measurable transmutation in inner sphere: 10% - TSG produces net positive energy beyond fuel chemical energy: 3% - The PUM cosmology is fundamentally correct: < 0.1%
These add up across different scenarios, not to 100%.
Q22: What would change your mind?
Toward Bendall being right: - Three independent labs reporting >5% calorimetric excess beyond fuel chemical energy - Mass-spectrometry of exhaust showing isotope shifts inconsistent with combustion - SEM/EDS replication showing element changes on properly-controlled inner sphere samples - Predictive success of any specific PUM cosmology number (e.g., a precision measurement of some constant matching a PUM ratio rather than the previously-known value)
Toward Bendall being wrong: - Three independent labs reporting null energy results in calibrated tests - Inner sphere materials analysis showing only ordinary surface contamination on properly-controlled samples - The ten-year horizon: if no replication has occurred by 2030, the case effectively closes - Bendall publicly retracting any single specific claim that turns out to be wrong (this would actually increase my confidence in his honest engagement, not decrease it)
The asymmetry is informative: positive evidence for any specific physics claim moves us toward “real.” Failure to replicate moves us toward “not real” but more slowly. We’re not symmetric here, and that’s appropriate for extraordinary claims.
