What Bob Greenyer is actually saying

The plain-language summary covers Bendall’s framework. This one covers Greenyer’s. They’re complementary — together they map the two main frames inside which the Thunderstorm Generator can be understood.

The 90-second version

Bob Greenyer is an English engineer who in 2012 co-founded the Martin Fleischmann Memorial Project (MFMP) — a community of researchers cataloguing and replicating experiments from the cold-fusion / LENR (Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions) field that’s existed in semi-exile since the 1989 Fleischmann-Pons announcement.

In 2022 a colleague forwarded Greenyer a video of one of Bendall’s Thunderstorm Generators running on a 300 kW grid-tied gas generator in Thailand. The exhaust looked clean. Some odd things were happening inside the apparatus. Greenyer recognised the pattern — he’d seen it before, in another investigator’s work decades earlier. He flew to the UK, then to Switzerland, examined Bendall’s hardware in person, and gave a 60-minute talk explaining what he thought was actually going on.

The talk is the centerpiece of the MFMP video archive. It is the cleanest existing translation of Bendall’s claims into the language of established LENR research. Without it, the TSG floats free of any scientific tradition. With it, the TSG slots into a specific lineage — Ken Shoulders’ “Electrum Validum” — that has fifty years of literature.

Greenyer doesn’t endorse Bendall’s broader cosmology. He works at the level of the device and the mechanism, not the framework around them.

Who Bob Greenyer is

A Yorkshire engineer with a long-form mind. Cofounded MFMP in 2012 with a small group of replicators interested in following up on Andrea Rossi’s E-Cat claims and other cold-fusion-adjacent experiments. The project is open-source — every protocol, every dataset, every video is published. They have been wrong publicly multiple times. That track record of public correction is the strongest argument for taking him seriously when he says something positive.

His core stance, repeated in many talks: the goal is reproduction, not advocacy. Find an experiment with anomalous results; build it independently; publish what you find. If the anomaly survives replication, dig deeper. If it doesn’t, publish the null and move on.

This is approximately how science is supposed to work, and approximately how it doesn’t actually work in fields where reputation is at stake. MFMP operates as a kind of patient, distributed replication service for claims the mainstream has dismissed or ignored.

Who Martin Fleischmann was

The person the project is named after. Fleischmann was a British electrochemist who, with Stanley Pons at the University of Utah, announced in March 1989 that they had observed nuclear fusion reactions in a benchtop palladium-deuterium electrolysis cell — at room temperature, with no neutron flux, no fast particles. The press called it “cold fusion.” The announcement triggered a worldwide scramble to replicate.

Within months, several major labs reported they couldn’t see the effect. Within a year, the consensus position in mainstream physics was that Fleischmann-Pons had made a measurement error. The field was effectively quarantined. Researchers who continued working on it lost grant funding, journal access, tenure prospects.

But the original claim was never cleanly disproved. Anomalous heat continued to be reported by various labs, intermittently, for the next thirty-five years. The phenomenon was renamed “Low-Energy Nuclear Reactions” (LENR) to escape the contaminated “cold fusion” label. A small community continued to publish, mostly in Journal of Condensed Matter Nuclear Science and similar venues, accumulating a body of work that’s hard to evaluate without entering it.

Greenyer’s project is, deliberately, a memorial to that community’s founder, and a continuation of his methodology.

What Ken Shoulders did

Ken Shoulders was an American physicist, born 1927, died 2013. Worked at SRI in the 1960s on early integrated-circuit lithography. After leaving mainstream research in the 1970s, he spent thirty-plus years documenting what he called Electrum Validum — bunched clusters of electrons that, in his vacuum-chamber experiments, exhibited four properties no conventional plasma should:

  1. Self-cohesion — they held together at scales (1-100 μm) far larger than any known electron-electron repulsion would allow
  2. High energy — emitted electrons at up to 100 keV, sometimes more
  3. Apparent transmutation — left witness marks on copper, silver, and other targets where the elemental composition had shifted (Cu → Sn, Ag → Pd, etc.)
  4. Unusual mobility — moved through dielectric materials in ways suggesting tunneling rather than ordinary electron transport

Shoulders published these observations in technical reports and patents. The mainstream physics community largely ignored them; the cold-fusion community embraced them as a candidate mechanism for the Fleischmann-Pons effect. The disagreement is unresolved.

What’s not in dispute: Shoulders’ devices were real, his measurements were taken, his published data is available. The question is whether the phenomenon is what he said it is, or an artifact of his apparatus.

Greenyer’s hypothesis, in his own words

From his talk “Hypothesis for operation of the TSG and some initial suggestions for preferred embodiment” (5,527 words, 63 minutes, given at the Bendall demonstration in late 2023):

“Water in the air leads to protons and atomic hydrogen plus electrons, all of which are paramagnetic, OH radicals and other ions. […] charge clusters bind to the paramagnetic oxygen. This whole process cascades on itself like a snowball rolling down a mountain. It leads to self-organization and the formation of nano clusters.”

Step by step:

  1. The atmosphere has the raw materials. 78% nitrogen, ~21% oxygen, water vapour, UV background, free electrons from cosmic-ray ionisation. All present, all measurable, all standard atmospheric chemistry.

  2. Oxygen is uniquely paramagnetic. Of the major atmospheric gases, only O₂ has unpaired electrons in its ground state. This makes it special as a binding site for charged particles.

  3. Water photolyses under UV. A 254 nm photon entering the bubbler chamber splits H₂O into hydroxyl radical (OH·) + hydrogen atom (H·) + free electron + proton (H⁺). All four species accumulate in the bubbler stream.

  4. The vortex tube concentrates them. Hilsch / Ranque flow separates charged species by mass and charge. Light free electrons cluster in one path; heavier protons in another.

  5. Self-organisation cascades. Bunched electrons + free protons + paramagnetic oxygen scaffold = nucleation site for EV cluster formation. Greenyer’s claim is this is the same process Shoulders saw in vacuum, here happening in atmospheric pressure with the right concentration of inputs.

  6. The plasmoid is the EV. What Bendall calls a “self-stabilizing toroidal plasmoid” Greenyer reads as a Shoulders EV trapped by the inner sphere’s geometry.

  7. The “yellow features” are EV witness marks. When Greenyer’s MFMP team examined the inner sphere of an 8-year-old TSG with SEM/EDS, they found persistent yellow patches with elemental composition that didn’t match the original SS-304. This is consistent with Shoulders’ transmutation observations — and inconsistent with simple oxidation.

The TSG has two natural reading frames:

Greenyer’s framing is smaller, less mystical, and more testable. It connects the TSG to fifty years of cold-fusion-adjacent literature, which has its own established methods, journals, replications, and disputes. A researcher entering through the Greenyer door has somewhere to put the TSG: it’s an EV reactor that runs on atmosphere, fuel, and UV. It belongs next to Mizuno’s plasma-electrolysis cells and Holmlid’s ultra-dense hydrogen experiments.

Bendall’s framing offers more (the cosmology, the ancient connections) but asks the reader to accept much more (a number-pattern cosmology presented as physics, literal readings of scripture, a reorganized periodic table).

You can take Greenyer’s framing without Bendall’s. You can take Bendall’s without Greenyer’s. The two are independent layers stacked on the same device.

Two corroborating voices added by the Alchemical Science corpus

Greenyer’s reading does not stand alone. Two further professional voices, surfaced in Jordan Collin’s Alchemical Science channel (see notes/19_alchemical_science_integration.md for the full extraction), add detail at the layers Greenyer leaves implicit.

Robert Haralick — the academic theoretical layer

Distinguished professor emeritus, CUNY (PhD program in computer science), 650+ publications, 85,000+ citations. Retired 2021 to set up a private water-science laboratory. Haralick analysed the same SEM-EDS-relevant residue chemistry Greenyer is mapping, and articulates what’s happening in formal stellar-nucleosynthesis + QFT language.

Where Greenyer says “Shoulders EVs that transmute their substrate,” Haralick says alpha-ladder fusion:

C → O → Ne → Mg → Si → S → Ar (each step is helium-4 capture; all exothermic; same mechanism red giants use to climb the periodic table to iron, after which Fe + He → Ni is endothermic and the ladder terminates).

Haralick names the missing decisive experiment Greenyer’s MFMP work has not yet completed: a 24-hour mass-spec scan of the exhaust gas for He, Ne, and Ar. None of those is in the fuel; none is at relevant ambient levels in air. If the alpha ladder is operating, those three noble gases must be in the exhaust. Haralick calls this “the experiment that would seal the knowledge.”

Haralick’s mechanism layer: - Giuliano Preparata’s 1995 QED Coherence in Matter as the load-bearing framework. Coherence domains are ~5 million water molecules in a ~70 nm volume oscillating in phase inside a self-trapped EM field. Hypothesised CD shape: torus. - Quasi-electrons: KT thermal energy promotes a hydrogen electron to its 12.07 eV excited state; electron leaves the proton, becomes a quasi-electron circulating the CD. - Counter-rotating CD stacks: adjacent CDs must have opposite internal-EM-field rotation directions or they decohere. This is the geometric origin of Bendall’s seven-layer counter-rotating gas pattern — not aesthetic choice, QFT stability requirement. - Plasmoid formation: cavitation bubbles in the bubbler release a longitudinal electric wave + scalar magnetic field (Tesla units, no N/S pole). Longitudinal wave hits the CW/CCW boundary between two CDs and fuses them into a plasmoid. - Aharonov-Bohm vector potential (proposed 1959, experimentally verified 1986): magnetic vector potential A carries information without energy. Haralick argues TSG quantum-field equations must be written at the potential level, not the transverse-EM-field level. Generalized Maxwell with quaternions allows longitudinal electric waves; canonical Maxwell does not.

Three corroborations of Greenyer’s hardware-level observations from Haralick’s analysed unit (a Caterpillar G3508E natural-gas engine, ~500 hours operation, dismantled April 2024): - Sphere ratio 4:3:2 is universal — outer 24″, middle 18″, inner 12″ on this unit; Haralick: “if you try spheres that are not in this ratio, it won’t work.” - No gamma radiation despite expected fusion gammas. Haralick passes through Nigel Dyer’s hypothesis: neutrinos route the released energy instead of gammas. - SEM-EDS residue elements: C, O, N, Si, S, Ca, Na, Al, Cl, Zn, Mg, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni — and an anomalous “promethium” reading. Cross-check against Greenyer’s primary MFMP SEM-EDS material returns zero Pm mentions; full analysis in 19c_promethium_flag.md — the Pm Lα line (5.432 keV) overlaps Cr Kα (5.414 keV) by 18 eV, well below typical EDS detector resolution. This is a documented false-positive mode in steel residue analysis. The cheapest decisive test is a $200 radiation counter on the residue sample (Pm has no stable isotopes; any genuine Pm at EDS-detectable concentrations must be measurably radioactive).

George Lush — the manufacturing-discipline layer

MD of Lush Heat Treatment UK (founded by his father 1952). Specialises in vacuum-furnace processing + brazing for aerospace, defense, space, power, commercial. NADCAP-rated. The heat-treater Carlson and Bendall keep mentioning.

Brings observations Greenyer’s hypothesis-talk does not directly cover: - Pock-mark self-healing. On a 1.5 mm thin-wall sphere (David Evans’s UK plasmoid-power-kit unit), plasmoid exit pits subsequently filled themselves back in. Lush has never seen this in any other metallurgical context. Strong directional evidence that the device is bidirectional matter↔energy at the sphere skin, not just a one-way exhaust transmuter — and a direct corollary of Shoulders’ EV witness-mark behaviour: launching plasmoids at copper discs left gold (and other elements) in the disc. - Pipe imploded inward, not burst outward. A ~3 mm stainless pipe section on a large unit was pulled inward — vacuum-collapse signature, not a pressure-vessel failure. Greenyer to publish on the MFMP channel. - Stainless thermocouples welded themselves into the spheres during instrumented runs. Same alloy as the sphere walls; transmutation/melding occurred. Worse: the same generator that had been running at 19-20% O₂ dropped to ~15% O₂ while instrumented. The standard probe disturbs the device’s operating regime. This is a Heisenberg-type measurement problem: orthodox instrumentation alters what it tries to measure. - Two-stage anneal protocol: hemispheres are annealed before welding, then again after the unit is assembled — possibly more passes interleaved. Argon’s role in the process is “completely counterintuitive.” - Wall-thickness rule-of-thumb: 3 mm is the practical minimum. 1.6 mm cracks at ~6 hours; 0.6 mm hemispheres on commodity supply sites are sub-spec and will fail. - Thermal anomaly in the upper sphere: hot at exhaust input, cold at the zero-point center, hot again further down. Violates ordinary thermodynamics. - Cherry-red glow without radiative heat: visible at night on the outer sphere while not warming a hand held nearby — implosive thermal pattern, not Stefan-Boltzmann.

Together with Haralick’s QFT framing, Lush’s manufacturing-floor data points at bidirectional matter↔energy at the sphere skin — reinforcing rather than supplanting Greenyer’s EV-in-air reading. Where Greenyer says “EVs transmuting their substrate,” Lush is showing the morphological signature in situ; where Greenyer points at Shoulders’ decades of vacuum-chamber witness marks, Haralick gives the alpha-ladder energetic equations and the Preparata coherence-domain mechanism.

How to engage with Greenyer’s frame

Questions for Greenyer (if you got an interview)

  1. Of the 32 MFMP videos in your archive, which 3-4 give the strongest evidence for the EV interpretation of the TSG? Which would you point a serious skeptic to first?

  2. The 8-year-old TSG inner-sphere “yellow features” — what’s the simplest control experiment that would distinguish EV-induced transmutation from surface contamination? What would the contamination samples look like?

  3. The Greenyer-EV reading bypasses Bendall’s cosmology. Is there anything in Bendall’s framework — any specific number, ratio, geometric claim — that you find evidentially supports the EV interpretation? Or is the cosmology entirely independent?

  4. If you had a $250k budget and 18 months, what’s the single experiment you’d run to settle whether the TSG is producing Shoulders-class EVs in air?

  5. Frank Polifka’s Windhexe (from your “Explaining the Tornado Machine” talk) and Bendall’s TSG share the basket-weave / vortex aesthetic. Is this convergent invention, common ancestry, or coincidence?

  6. The cold-fusion field has been quarantined since 1989. How does the TSG’s “ambient-air, no precious metals, $700 BOM” character change the politics of LENR research?

  7. You opened your hypothesis talk with “This is not perfect. I may be wrong.” What would change your mind toward “the TSG isn’t doing what I think”? What would be the strongest disconfirming evidence?

The honest summary

Greenyer is working in an unusual posture: independent investigator with no financial stake, operating from inside a marginalised research community, willing to be wrong publicly, mapping a maverick inventor’s claims to fifty years of dissident-but-published literature. His framework is more testable than Bendall’s, less ambitious than Bendall’s, and explains the same physical apparatus through a much smaller theoretical claim.

Whether the EV-in-air interpretation is right is genuinely open. The experiments to settle it are not expensive. The community of researchers who could run them exists. The current state of public discussion is dominated by enthusiasm and dismissal in roughly equal measure; Greenyer’s contribution is to replace both with a specific, falsifiable hypothesis.

That’s what makes him worth listening to even if you’re skeptical of Bendall.
